Where to Begin

Where to Begin

Start Here

The search process for senior care can seem overwhelming. You've likely never had to consider it and have numerous questions. How much longer can Mom and Dad care for themselves? What are the signs they need support? When should we start looking? What is senior living?

These are normal questions that can leave you feeling stressed. However, asking yourself these questions is one of the strongest indicators that it's time to begin your search.

As with other major life decisions, it's best to be proactive and prepared.

That's why we at Paramount suggest starting your search as soon as you begin to think about the possibility that your loved one may need additional support. If you're worrying about their well-being, you're ready.

Here are some common observations that may indicate your loved one needs more support:

Medical Visits

Recent ER, hospital, or rehab visit(s)

Financial Changes

Late or unpaid bills, mail accumulation, not checking the mailbox daily.

Dressing

Wearing the same clothes for multiple days, incomplete laundry, empty hampers, hanging damp clothes, especially pants, to dry.

Decreased personal hygiene

Unkempt hair, noticeable lack of oral care, ungroomed fingernails.

Falls
Many loved ones will keep falls secret. You may find them fallen or notice indicators like bruising on their bodies from possible falls.

Change in eating habits
Eating less nutritious meals and foods they're known to enjoy. Eating more convenient foods like microwave meals, canned foods, and instant foods.

Untimely Medication Refills
Check the label on the bottle or do a medication pill check based on dosage.

Forgetfulness
Daily forgetfulness for routine items like what they ate, what time they woke up, what medications they took, and who they communicate with.

Changes in Routine Communication
Changes in how often they call or check in with loved ones, changes to the content of the conversation when they do call.

Household Condition
Increasingly unkempt, items misplaced or not where they typically are located, new odors, unmaintained garbage.

Advancement of Progressive Medical Conditions
Use of oxygen, known dementia diagnoses, etc.

Driving Quality Deterioration
Parked crooked/uneven, new scratches or dents, increased volume of scratches or dents.
